Health professionals in the easternmost region of Camagüey highlighted the negative consequences of obesity, especially in children, who when they gain a lot of weight are exposed to suffer serious ailments that affect their psychological, physical and social development.
According to the specialists, the prevalence of overweight and obesity in preschoolers increases progressively and constitutes one of the main non-declarable diseases; In addition, it is one of the most difficult conditions to treat.
Although the locals are people in their vast majority with a high level of schooling and preparation, many families do not yet understand the damages of excessive weight gain.
Among the factors to take into account to avoid childhood obesity, exclusive breastfeeding, the adequate introduction of complementary feeding, adequate consumption of fruits and vegetables, the habit of a healthy breakfast and the practice of regular physical activity stand out to reduce sedentary activities.
In a world where technology dominates everyday life and strengthens itself as the main entertainment mechanism for children at home, it would be appropriate to ask to what extent it is beneficial for children to spend most of their time in front of computers and tablets, instead to enjoy recreation and play in parks and other spaces.
Among the main consequences of childhood obesity are the increased cardiovascular risk, the onset of type 2 diabetes mellitus and chronic renal failure.
