Guaimaro: 226 years of existence
In the eighteenth century the effective appropriation of land in Cuba was manifested in many places from the founding of towns and villages, in Port-au-Prince that process of urban expansion went very slow and Guaimaro was one of the first towns founded in the jurisdiction of the city.

Fidel visited Las Margaritas, a farm near the railroad town of Martí in Guáimaro where Álvaro Barba Machado was born, one of the most prominent Guaimaro revolutionaries during the republican political struggles.
The name of the village, Guaimaro corresponds to the indigenous voice with which aborigines named a tree that abounded where the city rises.
