Georgetown, Jun 5.- The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) criticized the decision by the US government to abandon the Paris Agreement on climate change, the Jamaica Observer newspaper reported today.
President of Guyana and the regional bloc, David Granger, assured in a statement that the international pact reflects the recognition of global warming and climate change as problems of global impact.
Consequently, CARICOM is deeply dismayed and disappointed by the decision of the United States to withdraw from the Paris Agreement, the president said.
He pointed out that climate change is an existing threat to small island states, especially in the Caribbean region, which is most likely to suffer the impact of natural disasters associated with this phenomenon.
The need for global action to combat global warming is urgent, said Granger, who attributed to the United States the responsibility to participate in those efforts because of its large greenhouse gas emissions.
CARICOM celebrates that most of the nations of the world remain committed to the Paris Agreement, concluded the president of the regional bloc, made up of 15 countries in the Caribbean area.
