Mexican Indigenous People Demand Respect for Ancestral Territories.Mexico, Jun 25.- Nayeri and Wixarikacados indigenous people, who have lived for centuries in the Mexican state of Nayarit, are demanding respect for their ancestral territories, which have been invaded by the builders of a dam.

Representatives of the indigenous people filed a lawsuit against federal institutions for granting permits to build the dam Las Cruces, which would affect their site of ceremonies and livelihood known as Keiyatsita.

Experts say that the construction of the dam would have a serious environmental impact and would affect the marsh ecosystem that is part of the San Pedro Mezquital River in the municipality of Rosamorada.

The project would take the water from the river and would cover more than 4,500 hectares, thus modifying the region's hydrographs and morphology irreversibly, as well as the local vegetation and fauna.
