Mexico, May 10.- The Mexican Senate approved today with 97 votes in favor, 20 against and three abstentions the new educational reform, which repeals the former, approved by President Enrique Peña Nieto.
In the vote on the legislation and after rejecting all the submitted reservations, the plenary endorsed the law with the rejection of the opposition National Action Party because the rest of those represented in the Senate granted enough ballots in favor to achieve a qualified majority.
Now there only remains the endorsement of the local congresses and the subsequent proclamation by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador so that the new legal device becomes effective. The education will be free and of quality from the primary level to the superior studies.
The constitutional articles on reformed education have some changes, for example, that study plans and programs include the teaching of mathematics, the so-called literacy, sexual and reproductive education, and others that were much debated.
In addition, the State guarantees the didactic materials, the educational infrastructure, its maintenance so the conditions of the surroundings are suitable.
In the Transitory Article 11, it was established that the Federal Executive, within a period no longer than 180 days counting from the entry into force of the reform, will define a National Strategy for the Improvement of the Pedagogical Schools, which will establish actions for its improvement.
The State will support scientific, humanistic and technological research and innovation, and will guarantee open access to the information derived from it, for which it must provide sufficient resources and incentives.
It was established that the admission, promotion and recognition of workers in the educational service, will be governed by the regulatory law of the System for the Career of Teachers, always prevailing the rectory of the State.
