Ciego de Avila, Cuba Jun 9.- Many beaches on Cayo Coco and Cayo Guillermo, north of Cuba, received an environmental recognition for complying with standards and requirements for their care and protection.
The shores of the hotels Tryp Cayo Coco (Playa Larga), Star Fish Cayo Guillermo (El Paso Beach), Melia Jardines del Rey and Memories Flamenco (Flamenco Beach) were recognized for the sustainable use of the bathing area and the physical, chemical and bacteriological parameters of the water.
Rafael Perez, a delegate from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment in Ciego de Avila, stated that the good management of solid wastes was also assessed, as they keep baskets in the bathing areas.
Las Coloradas beach on Cayo Coco, which includes hotels Pullman Cayo Coco, Melia Cayo Coco and Sol Cayo Coco, and the shore of the Playa Pilar Iberostar Hotel, on Cayo Guillermo, were previously recognized for the protection of the coastal area where they are located.
In all cases, those beaches benefited from sand dumping, an action to mitigate the effects of erosion and increase the recreational areas, in order to offer a high-quality product, according to market demands.
Such an initiative, included in the 'Tarea Vida' (Life Task), a Cuban State's plan to mitigate the negative effects of climate change, is already present in some beaches in Varadero, Matanzas, and Cayo Santamaria, north of Villa Clara.
