Cuban experts debate on diversification of sugar industry. Taken from Prensa Latina.Havana, Sep 26.- The importance of having a diversified, efficient and flexible sugar industry will be debated in Havana on Thursday among experts and academics, who will also highlight the important role of this good in the Cuban economy, culture and society.

The exchanges of opinions will take place within the framework of a forum organized by the Economic Society of Friends of the Country (SEAP) and the Association of Cuban Sugar Technicians (ATAC). ATAC emerged early last century and is considered the forerunner of the country's technical societies.

During the meeting, held at the National Sugar Training Center, writer and essayist Miguel Barnet will offer a lecture entitled: The Culture Generated by the World of Sugar.

Dr. Oscar Almazan will speak about sugar in Cuba's economic, social and cultural history and nationality, and the role of Francisco Arango y Parreño, a prominent figure in founding the SEAP.

The Office of the Historian of Havana, Azcuba Business Group, Research Institute for Sugarcane Derivatives (ICIDCA), Tecnoazucar enterprise, and related ministries and agencies, are also among the promoters of the workshop.

For several centuries and until 1990, the sugar industry was Cuba's main economic activity and is currently a strategic sector, which should increase its efficiency due to the benefits it can provide.
