Breast cancer, second cause of death in the Americas. Taken from Prensa Latina.Washington, Oct 18.- Breast cancer is the most common in women and the second leading cause of death in the Americas region, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) reported today.

A report issued here by the regional health agency warned that more than 462,000 women are diagnosed with that condition and about 100,000 die each year.

The text also explained that if these current trends continue, by 2030 the figure could increase by 34 percent.

In high-income countries, programs organized using mammography have led to early diagnosis and effective treatment, leading to a reduction in breast cancer mortality, PAHO ratified.

However, there are many challenges in implementing such effective programs in resource-limited environments.

In an effort to overcome these challenges, PAHO launched an awareness-raising campaign that will run throughout the month of October.

The objective of this project is to make known the risks of the disease, as well as its first signs and symptoms, in connection with the celebrations, this October 19, of the World Day of the fight against breast cancer, an initiative promoted by the World Health Organization (WHO).
