Cuban presence is highlighted in Gastroenterology Association. Taken from Prensa Latina.Havana, Oct 24.- The member of the Governing Board of the Central American and Caribbean Association of Gastroenterology, Maria Isabel Valdes, highlighted on Thursday the inclusion of Cuba as full member to such a regional organization.

Valdes praised the Cuban gastroenterologists' efforts and work across the Caribbean nation, focusing mainly on primary healthcare and education of society to prevent these diseases.

In an interview with Prensa Latina, Maria Isabel Valdes stressed that Cuba boasts a Gastroenterology Institute and research centers where medicines are being made for the entire world. These are institutions that many regional nations do not have yet.

Referring to the existence of digestive diseases in the region, Valdes noted the percentage has shot up. However, she added, finding new diagnosis methods, such as digestive endoscopy, allowed to learn, treat and follow up those pathologies.

By 2020-2030 period, she stated, we planned to fight hepatitis C and liver cancer, the third cause of death in our region. Likewise, the President of the Cuban Society of Gastroenterology, Mirtha Infante, repeated Cuba's gratitude for being elected as member of that Central American association.
