It was the month of May of '1950', Guáimaro was a region where the fighting and independence character of its children shone. On the 29th, Luz Palomares García was born, a beautiful girl who, since she was a little girl, fed her patriot anxieties to the point of being named Captain of the Liberation Army.
When she turns 19 she attends the sessions of the First Constituent Assembly. From that moment on, she began to further develop her active life, which was entirely linked to the struggle.
On May 11, 1869, the Mambises decided to burn the city before delivering it to the enemy. Along with other families, she goes into the bush. Time passes and three years later she is surprised by the guerrilla of Tizón, an unscrupulous murderer who didn’t hesitate to kill with machete blows the two brothers of Luz, Manuel and Pedro, they were 14 and 12 years old.
She and the others who accompanied her witnessed everything. The pain of what was lived in the Finca la Redención remained in the memory of the captain forever. The impression caused by such a horrendous crime also caused the death of Mercedes, her mother.
Later, Luz Palomares García was imprisoned. They locked her in the well-known barracks of the 28 Columns, located in Victoria de las Tunas. From there she is transferred to Holguin, and transferred to the Periquera, a cavalry barracks that was given as a prison.
Many events happened. That woman, who from a very young age dressed as a patriot, was released, a Holguin family gave her shelter until what was lived in the Zanjón, a fact that occurred a day before the death sentence was executed in Guaimaro by firing of her father. Luckily this decision was commuted and exile was ordered to another region, in this case the chosen one to give continuity to this moving story turned out to be Baracoa, once a village in which Luz meets Francisco Navarro Estrella, who later became her husband and father of numerous children.
With him, she lived in the El Buquion farm, neighborhood of Toa, next to the Nibujón beach, a strategic area where the supply for the Guerrero Echevarria warrior expedition was located.
On August 19, 1895 the Spanish Army attacked the farm and surprised them, before the assault Luz did not freeze, on the contrary, machete in hand, mounted on horseback, galloped off and harangued the patriots and made the enemy flee, as well saves the arms shipment brought by General Francisco Sánchez Echevarria.
From that day there was no lack of praise, hugs and moving phrases, the troop knew that it had a woman made of courage.
The exclamation did not wait, it was heard again and again: "For this woman we have triumphed and she has earned the rank of Captain of the Liberation Army."
Luz Palomares García participated in ten independence wars. She died on August 1, 1948 in Antillas, Oriente, where she had established her residence. Even today, despite the passage of time, the people remember her. She was 96 years when she died and an incredible story difficult to erase.
