Cuban Marlies Mejias Seeks to Win Cycling Race in Uruguay

Cuban Marlies Mejias.Montevideo, Jan 27.- Pan American champion Marlies Mejias will seek to win the first International Women's Cycling Tour of Uruguay, after concluding the second stage in the city of Minas, in Lavalleja department.

About 90 cyclists from Argentina, Brazil, Spain, Chile, Cuba and the host country will start a 120 kilometer race at 8:30 a.m. local time within that locality, in the northeastern area of Montevideo.

Mejias, of the Weber Shimano Ladies Power team, won yesterday the first 90-kilometer race after a final tight sprint and moved Argentina's Tania Ponce de Leon, of Peloton Ercila team, and Chilean Aranza Villalon, also of Weber Shimano, to second and third position, respectively.

The Cuban athlete officially premiered in this competition with that club after having competed in several others as a guest.

She is accompanied by four other athletes: Cristina Greve, Mercedes Fadiga, Maribel Aguirre and Aranza Villalon.

Weber Shimano Ladies Power is the only Latin American team licensed by the International Cyclist Union.

The International Women's Cycling Tour of Uruguay will take place until Sunday, January 29th, and consists of four stages and an individual time with a total of 271.2 kilometers.
