Guatemala City, Apr. 21.- Comunicaciones won 1-0 against Guastatoya, securing their place in the category with only one round remaining in the Clausura 2026 Guatemalan football regular season.
The "Cremas," led by Chilean coach Marco Antonio “El Fantasma” Figueroa, took the field at their capital stronghold, Cementos Progreso, with the goal of securing three points to ensure their permanence in the National League.
After a scoreless first half, the "Albo" squad continued to press harder than their opponents, and in the 5arg 59th minute, Colombian striker Omar Duarte scored the decisive goal.
In the 75th minute, the hosts also benefited from the expulsion of the "Pecho Amarillo" midfielder, Yordi Estid Adonay.
Without further goals on the scoreboard, the visitors remained in eighth place with 28 points, but they need to finish on a high note for two reasons: to advance to the quarterfinals ahead of Mictlán (26) and to avoid relegation to the First Division.
So far, Achuapa is the only team set to leave the tournament, with 43 points in the aggregate standings, followed by Los Conejos (50), Malacateco (50), and Guastatoya (50). Marquense (53) will also need to be careful in their final appearance.
Xelajú MC leads with 36 points, ahead of Mixco (36), Municipal (35), Comunicaciones (35), Antigua GFC (33), Cobán Imperial (32), Los Leones de San Marcos (30), and Guastatoya (28).
An interesting race is underway for the Pichichi (top scorer) title, with Argentina's Nicolás Martínez of Mixco leading with 15 goals, having scored twice on Sunday to overtake Uruguay's Diego Casas of Marquense (14) at the top.
The "Albiceleste" player is pursuing his third consecutive scoring title with the "Chicharronero" squad and his fourth in this Central American region (he achieved his first in Clausura 2021 with Achuapa).
Among goalkeepers, Argentina's Tomás Casas of Cobán Imperial leads with an average of 0.99 goals conceded per match, ahead of Paraguay's Rubén Escobar of Guastatoya (1.00) and Guatemala's Jorge Moscoso of Mixco (1.05).
The regular stage of the Clausura 2026 (double round-robin) will conclude on Sunday, April 26.
