Havana, July 29.- Marlies Mejías earned a second medal for Cuba at the Central American and Caribbean Games hosted in this city: silver in the track cycling Omnium event, held at the national velodrome of the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center.
The only athlete to surpass her was Mexico's Yareli Acevedo, the 2025 world champion in the points race, the omnium champion at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games, and a multiple laureate in continental championships.
Yareli won the Scratch and Tempo Race, while Marlies won the Elimination. The conclusion of the demanding event came in the Points Race, where the Mexican athlete has extensive experience due to her frequent participation in high-level events.
Marlies also holds numerous podium finishes in this race, and although she has focused more on road cycling in recent years, she treasures two major achievements: eighth and seventh place, respectively, at the London 2012 and Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games.
“I am happy with these two medals and I believe I still have another opportunity on the road on August 1st. Now I am going to rest a bit to be in the best condition for that day,” commented the athlete, who made her debut here by winning the individual time trial.
