China sets world record for annual electricity consumption

Beijing, Jan 17.- China's total electricity consumption exceeded 10 trillion kilowatt-hours for the first time in 2025, reaching 10.4 trillion, with a year-on-year growth of five percent, an official source reported today.

The National Energy Administration stated that this is a historic record for a single nation worldwide.

The agency specified that this volume is more than double the annual electricity consumption of the United States.

The entity indicated that the figure also surpasses the combined consumption of the European Union, Russia, India, and Japan.

China is the world's largest electricity consumer and in recent years has promoted policies to balance the growth in demand with the development of clean energy and improvements in energy efficiency.

The Asian giant is the global leader in the generation and consumption of energy from renewable sources, as well as the main producer and exporter of solar panels, wind turbines, electrolyzers, heat pumps, batteries, and electric vehicles.

The International Energy Agency recently reported that the global installed capacity of renewables could double by 2030, with an increase of 4,600 gigawatts, equivalent to the combined production of China, the European Union, and Japan.

Experts recalled that despite the global push, Western countries still maintain a strong dependence on coal and gas, in contrast to the expansion in Asia, which leads the transition with China at the forefront of technological development.
