In Guáimaro, the essential contribution of Veterinary Medicine

To the Doctor in Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science, Elsa Juana Arias Delgado, her love for animals motivated her to choose such a generous profession.

After 32 years of work experience and now retired, she decided to return to the Guáimaro Veterinary Clinic, her second workplace after graduating.

At the beginnig it was a challenge, “another world” - as she describes it - she had previously started his professional career in La Majagua, in a unit specializing in small sheep livestock.

Her new responsibilities at that time required other skills, so she attended training in Camagüey for three months to improve his theoretical and practical knowledge and gain skills in surgery.

Today, she remember recalls the journey of just over three decades of dedication to caring for animals "with everything they entail": physical examinations, disease diagnosis, treatment guidance, possible diets, surgeries, cures, administration of deworming or immunization vaccines, and emergency care.

Located on Central road Martí #15, the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory of the easternmost municipality of Camagüey has competent technical personnel.

Specialist Naida Sosa Morales comments on the Brucella serology test performed on all species, primarily cattle, horses, and pigs, to detect possible infections with this bacterium.

She also mentions other services at the center: cytology, for the identification of various conditions through the analysis of cells and small tissue samples; coprology, a rapid, noninvasive diagnostic tool focused on the study of feces; bee analysis, a modern beekeeping procedure that allows for the evaluation of colony status; and macropathological examination of the viscera of dead animals.

According to Naida, the samples arrive at the laboratory through joint planning with field technicians and veterinarians from agricultural cooperatives, credit and service providers, as well as from basic production units and state and non-state sector companies.

Animal health and welfare.

To Guaimaro's doctors and veterinary technicians, as public servants, it is essential to care for clients or pet owners, as well as to promote hygiene, feeding, care, and play practices appropriate to the characteristics of each species.

The work of these specialists in the diagnosis, prognosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases is at the heart of the mission of the local pet clinic, open to the public Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and in the afternoon from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Recognition of the work of the men and women involved in veterinary medicine in the birthplace of the Constitution is the best incentive to continue a project that faces numerous adversities.

While resource and input limitations are hampering services, the will to overcome obstacles to animal health and welfare prevails, factors that have a significant impact on human health.
