In Camagüey, discipline prevailed in complying with the measures adopted to mitigate the impact of Hurricane Melissa, stated Walter Simón Noris, president of the Provincial Defense Council.
However, he considered that for future meteorological events it is necessary to work with more rigor and risk perception from the management and command structures in each locality.
Jorge Enrique Sutil Sarabia, vice president of that body and head of Civil Defense in Camagüey, acknowledged that the province's preparation from the early warning stage was vital to carry out the corresponding actions with each phase.
Based on the influence that the cyclonic system still exerts on the northern zone, as it moves away from the national territory, Lieutenant Colonel Félix Villegas Varona, head of the Civil Defense Organ in the province, specified that more than 73,000 people continue to be protected in state centers or in the homes of family and friends.
The return to their places of residence, he clarified, will be carried out in an organized and safe manner when the recovery phase or the stage of normality is decreed.
Michel Leyva Ávila, head of the Water Subgroup, reported that the reservoirs did not receive significant rainfall, while the water supply remains stable and cleaning work will continue on pits, registers, ditches and bridges, among other sanitation tasks.
Similarly, Carlos Morán Giraldo, head of the Health Subgroup, commented that medical assistance is guaranteed in the protection centers, with the availability of hypochlorite to improve water quality, and that conditions are being prepared to develop intensive treatment against arboviruses in the coming hours.
Regarding the resumption of teaching activities, Loreley Suárez Capdevila, head of the Education, Culture and Sports Subgroup, stated that they continue to assess the situation in order to make a decision at the appropriate time, as 62 educational institutions still house several families from Camagüey.
The province of Camagüey is preparing to support recovery efforts and make donations to the eastern provinces severely affected by Hurricane Melissa.
