Cuba advances in the assembly of an energy storage system

Havana, December 28th.- Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, Cuba’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, highlighted this Saturday that the investment in energy storage equipment is part of the Government Plan for the Recovery of the National Electric Power System.

Through the social network X, the Minister responded to a post by the Electric Union (UNE) that announced the start of the installation of the first battery container of an Energy Storage System (BESS, by its acronym in English) in the town of Cueto, Holguín province.

This investment will offer more stability and sovereignty to the national electric system, emphasized the Minister, who stressed that work continues diligently for the wellbeing of the people.

The project, carried out jointly with the Military Construction Union (UCM), represents the concrete materialization of one of the most anticipated projects to face the energy crisis affecting the country.

BESS systems allow storing excess energy generated during periods of low demand to release it during times of high consumption or when there are interruptions in generation, smoothing fluctuations and improving the reliability of the entire grid.

This advance in Cueto is part of a broader plan that involves the installation of several similar systems in key locations throughout the country.

Investment in storage technology is seen as a fundamental component to increase the system’s resilience, integrate intermittent renewable energy sources more efficiently, and move towards greater energy sovereignty, reducing vulnerability to failures in thermoelectric plants.
