A new ship carrying humanitarian aid sent by the Government of Venezuela and the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA-TCP) arrived this Wednesday, December 17, at the Guillermón Moncada port in Santiago de Cuba to support the island’s recovery after the impact of Hurricane Melissa.
The shipment consists of several containers with materials and supplies primarily intended for the reconstruction of road infrastructure and other sectors that were severely affected by the hurricane.
This new arrival strengthens the solidarity alliance among the ALBA-TCP nations, reaffirming their commitment to regional cooperation. Thanks to the support of countries such as Venezuela and Bolivia, along with the solidarity contribution from Mexico, Cuba enhances its response capacity to mitigate material damage and accelerate the rehabilitation of land communications in the eastern part of the archipelago.
Despite external pressures attempting to halt this type of solidarity, the arrival of the ship ensures the continuity of reconstruction work and reinforces Cuba’s disaster response capacity against large-scale natural disasters.
Previously, on December 8, the ship "Manuel Gual," also sent by Venezuela and ALBA-TCP, arrived at the Guillermón Moncada port with machinery and more than 7,110 tons of supplies destined for the population affected by the meteorological phenomenon.
The international support complements the sovereign efforts of the nation, which is currently optimizing the use of its own operational resources in a complex scenario aggravated by the economic blockade imposed by the United States.
Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez has been touring the affected areas and directly supervising recovery efforts in Santiago de Cuba. His presence on the ground began just one day after the hurricane passed.
Recently, within the framework of the centenary of Fidel Castro Ruz, the 25th ALBA-TCP Summit held on December 14 served as a platform for Díaz-Canel to reaffirm the region's commitment to "dignified resistance."
The president emphasized that, in the face of destabilizing campaigns, the unity of the bloc is the strategic response to guarantee sovereignty. By invoking the ideas of heroes such as Bolívar and Martí, as well as the example of Fidel and Commander Hugo Chávez, the Cuban president reaffirmed that the common priority of the mechanism will continue to be peace and integration in the face of any form of aggression.
