The Institute of Meteorology's Forecast Center reported that Tropical Storm Melissa slowed Wednesday and began moving northwestward over the central Caribbean Sea.
Ailyn Jústiz Águila, head of the Forecast Center, and specialist Laura Leiva Pit told Granma newspaper that the system would maintain a slow movement in the coming days, with favorable oceanic and atmospheric conditions for its gradual intensification.
According to data recorded at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Melissa was centered at 14.2 degrees north latitude and 73.2 degrees west longitude, approximately 500 kilometers south-southwest of Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
The cyclonic organism presented maximum sustained winds of 85 kilometers per hour, higher in gusts, and a central pressure of one thousand three hectopascals
The Forecast Center reiterated that, due to Melissa's current position, its slow movement, and the time of year, its evolution and future trajectory are being closely monitored, as it is considered a potential threat to the Caribbean.
