Spanish sculptor Xavier Mascaró returns to Cuba with his art

Havana, Nov. 26 – Spanish sculptor Xavier Mascaró is finalizing the details today for a new exhibition in Cuba, which will open on December 4 at the National Museum of Fine Arts in this capital city.

Under the title Xavier Mascaró: Archaeology of the Present, the artist will present a collection of paintings and sculptures dated between 2014 and 2025, in the temporary exhibition room on the first floor of the Universal Art Building.

According to the museum's Facebook page, “Reflections on memory and tradition resonate throughout more than 30 pieces, affirming his interest in distancing himself from historical narratives to challenge knowledge as an exclusive configuration of the European and Western canon.”

Considered one of the Spanish artists with the greatest international prominence, he has brought his art to France, Argentina, Mexico, the United States, Colombia, and Austria.

Mascaró, author of The Guardian, located on Havana’s Avenida del Puerto, conceives his work based on the study of ancestral cultures and ancient legends.

“A pretext that warns us about the distortions of the concept of beauty inherited over the years under the conditioning of Greco-Roman patterns, designed to feed cultural and media fascism,” adds Jorge Fernández, director of the institution and curator of the exhibition.

The collection consists of about ten sculptures made of iron, copper, and aluminum, along with more than twenty acrylic drawings on paper, cardboard, and fabric.

Xavier Mascaró: Archaeology of the Present will remain open to the public until March 1, 2026.
