Tegucigalpa, January 24th - An earthquake measuring 3.0 on the Richter scale shook the northern region and the Caribbean of Honduras today, announced the Secretariat of Risk Management and National Contingencies (Copeco).
With an approximate depth of three kilometers, the tremor that occurred on the morning of this Saturday was located eight kilometers from the municipality of Omoa, in the northern department (region) of Cortés.
So far, there are no reports of structural damage or casualties, according to Copeco.
The civil protection agency, which remains on alert for possible aftershocks, urged caution and prevention among the population of that department.
This is the fourth earthquake reported by authorities in the Honduran Caribbean in recent days.
The first seismic event dates back to Friday, January 9th, with a magnitude of 5.0, at a depth of one kilometer, located 66 km from Puerto Cortés.
Although Honduras is not a highly seismic country, it does have geological faults that can cause damage, such as the Coco and Caribbean faults, and the so-called Ring of Fire, a vast area surrounding the Pacific Ocean that concentrates 90 percent of the world's tectonic and volcanic activity.
