Nicaragua conveys condolences to Chile following forest fires

Managua, January 23rd – The Government of Nicaragua today sent a message of condolences to Chile following the wildfires that have ravaged several areas of that South American country, resulting in more than 20 deaths.

“Being aware of the tragic fires that have already taken the lives of precious brothers in that beloved country, we extend to you our sincere and heartfelt condolences, which we also extend to the families and communities of the affected areas,” the message addressed to Chilean President Gabriel Boric states.

The text, signed by co-presidents Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo, adds that with the strength and resilience of that brotherly people, Nicaragua trusts that Chile will overcome this misfortune, while expressing prayers of brotherhood and solidarity “with the great affection of this blessed and always free Nicaragua.”

According to Chilean authorities, the wildfires have also caused more than 20,000 people to be displaced and the destruction of approximately 800 homes, as part of a preliminary assessment of the disasters affecting the south-central part of the country, particularly the Ñuble and Biobío regions.

The most recent update from the National Forest Corporation indicates that 17 wildfires remain active in the Biobío, Ñuble, and La Araucanía regions, while another 10 are under observation.
