Quito, Dec. 11 - The Argentine Lionel Messi will play in Ecuador next February 7, when his team, Inter Miami, faces Barcelona SC at the Monumental Stadium in Guayaquil, according to reports released here today.
The Ecuadorian club announced on its social media that the match will take place as part of the American team's tour through several South American cities.
"This is not just a game, it’s history," Barcelona posted when announcing the match.
Daniel Molina, the event production manager, revealed to local media that the negotiations to make the game happen took longer than expected, but the agreement was finalized with full institutional support.
“It’s an ambitious project and we fully trust that Ecuador is ready for a spectacle of this magnitude. What we will see will be something unprecedented in the country,” he stated.
Inter Miami’s tour will also include matches in Peru and Colombia, with Messi as the central focus of the tour, although all their stars are expected, including David Beckham.
The Argentine player will return to the Monumental Stadium in Guayaquil, where he was present during the qualifiers for the Qatar 2022 World Cup.
Last September, Ecuadorian fans waited for him, as he did not travel with the Argentine team for the match against Ecuador prior to the 2026 World Cup.
