Washington, Dec 5 - The increasing threats from the United States against Venezuela today raise expectations of an imminent military action against that country, which continues to generate reactions of rejection in Washington.
Democratic Congressman Jim McGovern, a member of the United States House of Representatives, warned: “I do not want a war in Venezuela and I will not stand by while this government drags this country into another endless war.”
“I am using all the tools at my disposal to stop Trump's reckless escalation in Venezuela,” wrote the representative for Massachusetts’s second congressional district since 1997.
Also, the Democratic minority leader in the Senate, Chuck Schumer, opposed President Donald Trump’s current stance towards Venezuela, accusing him of bringing the United States “closer and closer to another costly foreign war” without Congressional approval.
Earlier, in a strong statement, Schumer criticized Trump’s escalating actions toward the South American nation and said that the current Oval Office occupant turned the Constitution upside down.
“The reckless actions of President Trump towards Venezuela are pushing the United States closer and closer to another costly foreign war,” declared the senator from New York.
“According to our Constitution, Congress alone has the power to declare war—not the President—and Congress has not authorized the use of military force against Venezuela,” he stated.
Schumer urged Trump to avoid entering another overseas conflict because “Americans are tired of endless foreign wars that cost the lives of countless US service members and drain precious resources.”
“This is not an America First policy,” emphasized the Democratic leader, who called for bipartisan support to halt Trump’s intentions.
His comments followed the Republican president’s publication nearly a week ago on his Truth Social platform stating that Venezuela’s airspace should be considered “completely closed.”
While addressing members of the US armed forces on Thanksgiving Day, Trump threatened a “very soon” start of ground operations inside Venezuela to eliminate alleged drug traffickers.
An editorial this week from the Los Angeles newspaper La Opinión urged a ‘No to war with Venezuela’ to prevent a new military adventure with an unpredictable outcome.
The newspaper recalled the current tense scenario, the indiscriminate bombing of more than twenty boats supposedly crewed by drug traffickers, and the massive Pentagon military deployment in Caribbean areas.
The United States government must “consolidate a true strategy to fight drug trafficking instead of using it as an excuse against leaders Trump dislikes,” La Opinión concluded. (Taken from Prensa Latina)
