PT-Brazil warns about geopolitical crisis between the USA and Venezuela

Brasilia, Dec 2 – The ruling Workers' Party (PT) of Brazil today warns about the escalating tension between the United States and Venezuela, marked by declarations, unilateral actions, and military movements that threaten regional stability.

In a statement published on its official website, the PT "emphasizes that Latin America must continue to be a zone of peace, dialogue, and cooperation, fundamental principles of Brazilian foreign policy and fully shared by the party."

It notes that dialogue between the presidents of the United States, Donald Trump, and Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, must prevail for a diplomatic path to be possible in the peaceful resolution of conflicts.

It refers to the fact that recently, Trump declared on his social media that "the airspace over and around Venezuela" would be "completely closed" to airlines, pilots, and any aircraft.

Such assertion, which seeks to apply U.S. extraterritorial jurisdiction over Venezuelan airspace, "has raised concerns about the possibility of unilateral military operations on Venezuelan territory, contrary to international law and the principle of state sovereignty."

According to the PT, tensions intensified after the White House decision to link Maduro with the so-called Cartel of the Suns, presenting him as a "foreign terrorist organization" without presenting evidence to the international community.

This measure sets sensitive precedents for possible external actions under the pretext of combating narco-terrorism, the note warns.
On the other hand, the political organization underscores the importance of maintaining and strengthening diplomatic channels of dialogue between Caracas and Washington.

It mentions the recent conversation between Maduro and Trump, which demonstrates that, even in adverse contexts, negotiation is possible and desirable.

"Brazilian foreign policy has always advocated the peaceful resolution of disputes, non-intervention, and respect for sovereignty as foundations of international coexistence, principles with which the PT remains fully aligned," states the document.

It calls for any initiative that increases the risk of armed conflict in the region to be immediately replaced by efforts of political understanding, diplomatic dialogue, and international cooperation.

"Latin America must remain a zone of peace. Therefore, we reiterate that the principles of PT's foreign policy include the sovereignty of peoples, the peaceful resolution of disputes, and respect for international law as indispensable paths for the preservation of peace on the continent," the PT statement concludes.
