Montevideo, Nov. 20 - The Uruguayan government is today seeking a solution to the announcement by the American company UKG to close its operations here, a decision that took even President Yamandú Orsi by surprise.
Ultimate Kronos Group announced its exit from the country, which means the dismissal of 300 employees working at the tech giant.
Orsi said the measure was unexpected, although he acknowledged that “it is a business model that is having its difficulties” due to fluctuations in the technology sector.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Labor and Social Security (MTSS) will summon representatives of the company to learn the reasons behind their withdrawal and to explore alternatives to the situation.
This was revealed by the head of the MTSS, Juan Castillo, who said that the institution had not been officially notified.
The Uruguayan government has criticized the method of dismissals via social media, as happened with UKG employees, according to statements at a press conference.
Castillo explained that the company established itself here three years ago with high expectations, and just a few days ago its manager declared that they planned to grow to up to 500 employees.
UKG is an American multinational technology company headquartered in Lowell, Massachusetts and Weston, Florida. It offers personnel and human resources management services.
