WARNING: Poor Construction Condition of Buildings in Kenya

Nairobi, January 9 – Organizations in the construction sector in Kenya warned today that 85 percent of the buildings in this capital are unsafe and require protective measures.

The statement from the Institution of Engineers of Kenya, the Alliance of Architects, and the Institute of Planners of Kenya comes just days after the collapse on January 2 of a 14-story building under construction in Nairobi, which left four people trapped under the rubble.

Of those trapped in the South C area, as of yesterday the fire department found the lifeless bodies of two residents, according to the digital portal Standard.

After calling on the government for a swift investigation into the building collapse, the aforementioned organizations stated that the officials who approved the construction of additional floors on the damaged building must be held accountable for breaching the professional code of conduct.

Local television reported days ago that building collapses are common in Nairobi, a city with high housing demand where real estate developers frequently violate construction regulations amid an environment of alleged corruption.

Just 10 years ago, authorities reported the collapse of eight multi-story buildings in the Kenyan capital, events that caused the death of 15 people and several injuries.
