Cuba wins and loses in the Independence Cup Boxing tournament

Havana.- Cuba recorded one win and one loss on the second day of the Independence Boxing Cup held in Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic.

One day after his team’s successful debut with Olympic champion Erislandy Álvarez (65 kg), 2023 world silver medalist Saidel Horta (60 kg) followed suit.

The judges’ decision came by a 3-2 verdict over the host’s Ángel Estrella, in another challenging bout for the favorites with much support from the home crowd for their representatives.

The Cuban defeat eliminated Yailena Palomo (51 kg), who lost 0-5 in her international debut against local fighter Esther Jiménez.

From the venue, Cuba’s men's team head coach, Eulises Pouyout, told JIT that this Wednesday Erislandy will return to the ring and double Olympic champion Julio César La Cruz (+90 kg) will make his debut.

Their opponents will be local contender Ezequiel Martínez and Barbadian Seht Lawrence, respectively.
