Camagüey advanced in investments with new photovoltaic parks

Camagüey, January 3rd – The Electricity Company in Camagüey province continued throughout 2025 investing in two new photovoltaic parks of 21.8 megawatts (MW) each, which will join another park of the same capacity inaugurated last May in the southern municipality of Vertientes, as part of the country’s efforts to increase the use of this type of renewable energy.

The sector in the territory is currently accelerating work at the La Cívica site, located north of this city, which is expected to be synchronized this January and add another 21.8 MW to the national system, according to midday peak radiation levels, which occur between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

In explaining this to the Cuban News Agency (ACN), Rolando González Rodríguez, director of investments at the mentioned entity, said that the tasks are currently focused on the installation of medium and low voltage wiring, which enables the connection of the panels to the inverters.

Progress was made on various components during last December, the official commented, including the assembly and installation of the tables that support the panels and the digging of trenches for the different conductors, following the effects of rains in this very humid area.

The La Cívica photovoltaic park already has the foundations for the primary and secondary containers and the inverter container ready.

The work mainly involves crews from Construction and Assembly Companies 1 and 2 of Camagüey, the one from Cayo Cruz, and another group of specialized entities, including COPEXTEL, the Information Technology and Automation Company (ATI), the Integral Automation Company (CEDAI), and Geominera.

Construction of the third 21.8 MW solar park is progressing in Ortigal, in the municipality of Florida, where the pilings for the tables are being placed and the foundations for the container bases are being worked on.

Personnel from several companies and other departments have supported earthmoving, the casting of the foundations for four platforms where the container structures will be installed, and the start of perimeter fencing.

The Electricity Company of Camagüey includes in its plans a 5 MW site in the municipality of Guáimaro, located east of the provincial capital of Agramonte, with 1 MW of energy storage.

Similarly, the completion of the 2.2 MW photovoltaic park in the Lesca area, which is part of another 100 MW program using Chinese technology, is among their aspirations.

Further ahead, together with the National Electric Union, the construction of three more photovoltaic solar plants is planned on the outskirts of the provincial capital, González Rodríguez stated in earlier remarks to ACN.

Investments in the sector during 2025 also covered the tourist hub of Cayo Cruz, under development north of the Esmeralda municipality, and productive hubs in the province that require irrigation, as well as infrastructure for food production.

Amid the complex scenario, driven by the capacity deficit in the thermoelectric plants of the Caribbean nation and the fuel limitations used by distributed generation equipment, similar projects continue to advance which, although they will not solve all existing problems, will represent a contribution to the scarce national electricity production, which depends largely on fuel processing.

The expansion of the use of renewable sources undoubtedly constitutes a reliable path to overcome the situation, as they provide clean, cost-free energy and help reduce environmental pollution.

Hence the various initiatives underway throughout Cuba, and in Camagüey, aimed at changing the energy matrix, which implies saving the financing used for fuel purchases.
