Young People from Camagüey Excel in Mathematics Olympiad

Camagüey, Dec.– Two students from Camagüey stood out at the 27th Central American and Caribbean Mathematics Olympiad, held in Costa Rica from December 6 to 12, 2025.

Yeison Alejandro David Abreu, from the municipality of Nuevitas, won the silver medal; while Javier Ernesto Galindo Nápoles, from the Máximo Gómez Vocational Pre-university Institute (IPVCE), took home the bronze medal, demonstrating their talent and creativity against youths from across the region.

Yeison trained at the Camagüey Vocational School alongside other outstanding students, under the guidance of coaches Osmani Morciego and Heriberto Donet. Although he does not belong to the IPVCE, the training he received strengthened his mathematical skills and allowed him to tackle problems in an inventive and effective way.

Meanwhile, Javier qualified for the national pre-selection while still a ninth-grade student, after being invited to the tenth-grade Mathematics contest and achieving excellent results. This shows that including young talents from the last year of basic secondary education in the IPVCE is a good decision.

After qualifying for Cuba’s national pre-selection, both students represented the country in the regional competition, earning their silver and bronze medals and showing that with effort, consistency, and adequate support, any challenge can become an opportunity to grow and reach goals. Their example inspires many young people in Camagüey and across the country.

The 27th Mathematics Olympiad brought together the best talents from Central America and the Caribbean and also awarded another Cuban, Diego García Rodríguez, from the IPVCE Eusebio Olivera Rodríguez in Sancti Spíritus, who won the gold medal, reflecting the dedication and creativity of Cuban students in international competitions.
