Cuban intellectual highlights the necessary unity of the left in Mexico

Mexico City, January 14 – The Cuban intellectual Omar González called on the left to organize movements in pursuit of unity, in response to a government in the United States that has never been so cruel or so politically erratic.

“We must build our own alternative media and virtual, digital communities. We need to network among ourselves, form groups. We must link and coordinate this entire movement. We must continue to unite,” he affirmed last night.

During a meeting at the Embassy of Havana in this capital with members of the Mexican Movement of Solidarity with Cuba and the Association of Cubans Residing in Mexico, the journalist considered that we live in a world where “reality is a broken mirror.”

“When one looks into a broken mirror, one can never see the complete visage. That truth is not understood, not recognized, which is why there is no reaction to it,” explained the writer, who has a long career leading Cuban cultural institutions.

He described it as incredible that what has been done by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, has not sparked the worldwide reaction it deserves, attributing this scenario to the fact that “social consciousness in general is sleepy or dormant.”

In his view, the media have long been dedicated to lulling, deceiving, and sowing uncertainty and confusion.

Regarding the difficult situation faced by the people on the island, besieged by the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States, González opined that it is unprecedented and emphasized the importance of the actions of solidarity movements worldwide in the face of this reality.

“Loneliness is the worst thing there is. Knowing oneself to be alone is spiritually devastating, but knowing oneself to be accompanied in the struggle, in the resistance, gives a lot of energy to live and to keep fighting,” he expressed.

In the year marking the centenary of the birth of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, to be commemorated on the coming August 13, the intellectual also highlighted the Commander in Chief’s vision of culture as a liberating force.

In his intervention at the meeting, the island’s ambassador to Mexico, Eugenio Martínez, reaffirmed the defense of Cuba and Latin America and the indestructible relationship between this North American country and the largest of the Antilles against any threat.
