Avatar 3 bets on emotions, visuals, and the box office

Los Angeles, Dec.- Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third installment of the film saga by acclaimed director James Cameron, opened this Monday with $345 million grossed in worldwide ticket sales by Sunday.

Released last December 19th, the Disney and 20th Century Studios film was the second highest-grossing Hollywood opening of 2025, only behind the $556 million of Zootopia 2 in November.

Cameron's film topped the charts in the United States and Canada, where it earned $88 million of its global total, according to Disney estimates.

Fire and Ash follows the story of the Na’vi people on the lush planet Pandora. Following the events of Avatar: The Way of Water, the new film delves into the open war against the RDA forces, who now seek total control over the place.

The story follows Jake Sully, Neytiri, and their family as they face a new and devastating threat that will test not only their unity but the very fate of Pandora.

The production expanded the visually stunning universe with never-before-seen biomes, amazing creatures, and even more advanced technology. It explores the secrets of the planet and the Na’vi’s spiritual connection with Eywa, pushing it to the limit.

The cast returns with Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Kate Winslet, Oona Chaplin, Jack Champion, Bailey Bass, Trinity Jo-Li, Cliff Curtis, and Britain Dalton.

James Cameron, along with producer Jon Landau, assures that this installment raises the emotional and visual stakes. "With Fire and Ash, we are taking the narrative to a more intense and personal territory, where each character’s choices have monumental consequences," said the director.
