Belém, Brazil, Nov 14.- The COP30 is progressing today in this city with discussions focused on the transition to a low-carbon economy, a challenge that demands deep changes in energy, industry, transportation, finance, and comprehensive emissions management.
Negotiators, delegates, and experts are dedicating the fifth day of the 30th United Nations Climate Conference (COP30) to outlining the pathways that will accelerate this transition over the next decade.
The energy sector is a central focus of the discussions, with calls to triple global renewable energy capacity and double energy efficiency by 2030.
Countries and international organizations are presenting advancements in the electrification of processes, the development of smart grids, and new storage technologies that aim to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
Industry and transportation are also making significant contributions to the debate. Industrial decarbonization is emerging as a crucial challenge, driven by low-carbon innovations, the use of green hydrogen, and carbon capture and storage projects.
In the transportation sector, attention is directed toward the expansion of electric vehicles, sustainable aviation fuels, and less polluting alternatives like trains and waterways.
One of the most discussed financial tools at the summit, carbon markets, is receiving special attention following the recent regulation of the Brazilian market, seen by several countries as an opportunity to meet part of the global demand for carbon credits.
The financial agenda is further complemented by discussions on ESG criteria (which measure whether a company is responsible, sustainable, and well-governed), corporate transparency, and the need to mobilize private capital for green projects.
Another key point of the day are non-carbon dioxide (CO₂) gases, responsible for a significant fraction of global warming.
Delegations are presenting strategies to reduce methane leaks in energy infrastructure, improve agricultural practices to decrease nitrous oxides, and accelerate the phasing out of fluorinated gases in refrigeration and air conditioning.
With these discussions, COP30 dedicates this Friday to technical yet crucial topics in a session aimed at laying concrete foundations for a just, viable, and global climate transition.
