The World Academy of Sciences elects two Cuban experts.

A case that drew attention due to its family ties occurred at the World Academy of Sciences (Twas). The Scientific Observatory announced the selection of siblings Dagmar García Rivera and Daniel García Rivera, renowned Cuban researchers with groundbreaking results in their respective fields. The official incorporation into Twas, founded in Italy in 1983, will be effective in 2026, the Cuban institution added in its report on the García Riveras: Dagmar holds a PhD in immunopharmacology and has dedicated her research to preventive vaccines against infectious diseases.

He stands out as a leader of high-impact projects, including the development of conjugate vaccines against pneumococcus, meningococcus, and typhoid fever, and during the COVID-19 pandemic, he played a key role in the development of the SOBERANA O2 and SOBERANA Plus vaccines, experts in the field argued.

Daniel is an internationally recognized specialist in biomolecular and medicinal chemistry. He directs a research and innovation laboratory that collaborates with the Cuban biotechnology industry in the development of new cancer therapies and vaccines.

He is the Cuban director of the German-Latin American Center for Global Health and Pandemic Prevention and co-developer of the SOBERANA vaccine.

Both are also members of the Cuban Academy of Sciences and contribute significant work to the public communication of scientific knowledge.

The 2021 election of Drs. Tania Crombet Ramos, Gerardo Guillén Nieto, and Ernesto Altshuler Álvarez to the World Academy of Sciences brought the number of Cuban professionals who are members of this autonomous international organization to 10.

His predecessors are Manuel Limonta Vidal, Hugo Pérez Rojas, Lila Castellanos Serra, María Guadalupe Guzmán, Luis Herrera Martínez, Vicente Vérez Bencomo and Lillian Álvarez Díaz.

Founded in Italy in 1983 by a group of prominent scientists under the guidance of Nobel Prize winner in Physics Abdus Salam of Pakistan, Twas brings together prestigious specialists in diverse fields of knowledge from more than 100 countries. Among its main missions is to promote the advancement of science in developing nations by granting scholarships and funding research.
