Washington, December 14 - Authorities in Rhode Island, in the northeastern United States, continue today the search operation for the suspect involved in a shooting that resulted in the death of two students and left nine others seriously injured at Brown University.

The mass shooting at Brown University is the first recorded in Rhode Island since at least 2008, according to the CNN database. So far in 2025, there have been more than 70 school shootings in the United States, the source noted.

President Donald Trump wrote in a Truth Social post that he had been informed about this new act of gun violence and initially stated that the alleged attacker was in custody, but later clarified that "Brown University police corrected their earlier statement: the suspect is NOT in custody."

During a press conference on Saturday evening, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley reported that the shooting occurred at the Barus & Holley engineering building shortly after 4:00 p.m. local time.

Smiley said the injured were transported to Rhode Island Hospital in a "critical but stable" condition.

Former Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis, quoted by CBS News, commented that the search for the Brown University gunman requires everyone's involvement because one of the challenges faced the previous day was the intense cold.

"Some of the officers on the perimeter were wearing typical attire for a normal night in a patrol car, not clothing suitable for being outdoors in below-freezing temperatures. So, in addition to the psychological impact of these events, there are many logistical aspects to consider over the next 24 hours," he explained.

Brown University was closed, and people were urged to lock their doors and avoid going outside. "People are scared. The best thing they can do is follow the authorities' recommendations," Davis noted.

The university reported that final exams were being conducted in the building at the time of the shooting.
