Sweden rejects US interference regarding sovereignty in Greenland

Stockholm, Dec.— Sweden's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Maria Malmer Stenergard, demanded respect on Tuesday for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Denmark, in response to the appointment of a special envoy from the United States to Greenland.

"In matters concerning Denmark and Greenland, decisions are made by Denmark and Greenland. Sweden fully supports its neighbor and will always defend international law," the foreign minister stated on the X social media platform.

The statement comes following the appointment of Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as special envoy by President Donald Trump, who declared that his mission will be "to make Greenland part of the USA."

European geopolitical analysts view this move as an escalation of Washington's pressure strategy over the resource-rich Arctic territory.

The island is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, with which Washington has had a defense treaty since 1951.

Both Copenhagen and the local Greenlandic government have repeatedly stated that sovereignty is not up for discussion and that they aspire to future independence, not annexation.

The United States' attempt to instrumentalize Greenland in its global geostrategic competition is seen as a direct challenge to the rules-based international order, where respect for territorial integrity is a fundamental pillar, observers in the Nordic region conclude.
