Plasma shield will protect Earth from solar storms

USA— Extreme solar storms can jeopardize essential systems such as GPS, communications, satellites, and power grids.
So far, the primary strategy has consisted of monitoring solar activity and anticipating the arrival of this phenomenon to prepare infrastructure; however, a group of researchers proposes temporarily intervening in Earth's magnetosphere to reduce the impact of a solar storm before it causes damage to Earth.
The proposal, detailed in a study published in the scientific journal Space Weather, is named "StormWall." It suggests using six spacecraft positioned in geosynchronous orbit to release materials such as barium or lithium, which are capable of ionizing and generating plasma in a specific area of Earth's magnetic environment.
According to simulations, this artificial increase in plasma mass could reduce the magnetic reconnection that allows solar wind to transfer energy to the magnetosphere, decreasing the intensity of a major geomagnetic storm by approximately half.
Nevertheless, this initiative is still in a theoretical phase and presents significant technical, economic, and political challenges.
The system would be single-use, requiring new payloads or launches after each intervention, as well as complex international coordination.
Even so, its proponents believe the cost could be justified given the potential impact of an extreme solar storm, as an event comparable to the Carrington Event of 1859 could cause trillions of dollars in losses and affect essential infrastructure worldwide.
To implement the system, about 436,000 kilograms of material and equipment would be needed in space, a quantity that researchers consider technically feasible in the near future.
According to the study, large rockets such as Starship or the Long March-9 could transport all the necessary material in less than two months.
Furthermore, researchers assert that the plasma would not contaminate the atmosphere because, after fulfilling its function, it would eventually drift away from Earth and disperse into the solar wind.
