Washington, Feb 3 - After a period of tensions, threats, and war of words, the President of the United States, Donald Trump, and his Colombian counterpart, Gustavo Petro, will meet today at the White House, a meeting that generates great expectations.
The face-to-face meeting materialized following a phone conversation between the two leaders weeks ago, marking a 180-degree turn in Trump's stance toward Petro and Colombia, a country that had been under the threat of a possible U.S. military attack.
Trump, who had accused Petro of being a drug trafficker, later said after the phone exchange that the meeting would be "very beneficial for Colombia and the United States."
For now, tensions have eased, although the U.S. president remains unpredictable.
Petro arrived in Washington DC, the capital, this Monday for the meeting with Trump.
Meanwhile, the Presidency of Colombia reported that the visitor's agenda includes political, academic, business activities, and engagement with the Colombian community in the United States.
