US intensifies pressure to force changes in Cuba, expert says

Havana, Feb. 8 - The United States is increasing pressure in a prolonged attrition strategy to force internal changes in Cuba, and its policy does not respond to humanitarian interests, a specialized source asserted today.

José Ramón Cabañas, director of the Center for International Policy Research (CIPI), stated that speeches about human rights and freedom conceal an agenda funded with millions of dollars aimed at destabilizing the constitutional order of the archipelago.

Washington is not seeking a relationship of mutual respect but intends to impose conditions, as it has historically done with other countries. In contrast, Cuba’s response does not involve surrender; it is based on organization, mobilization, and defense of principles, with national sovereignty as the core, the analyst told the Cuban News Agency.

The director of CIPI described a scenario of new-type wars, through which influence at a distance is prioritized via economic pressure, delegitimizing political discourse, and media manipulation.

He also maintained that projects presented as independent from foreign platforms are not spontaneous, as they seek to create chaos and justify more aggressive measures.

Cabañas recalled that Havana and Washington signed 22 memoranda of understanding in areas such as counter-terrorism, combatting drug trafficking, and preventing migration fraud.

The main support for the United States Coast Guard in the Caribbean is coordinated with Cuba, especially regarding illegal migration; in fact, Cuban authorities have assisted vessels in the Florida Straits for humanitarian reasons, the expert affirmed.

Deeply knowledgeable about Cuba-United States relations, Cabañas indicated that the highest numbers of human exchange between the two countries were recorded during Donald Trump's first administration, and not under Barack Obama's government.

Meanwhile, he pointed out that around 60 percent of the population in the United States favors normalizing the bilateral diplomatic and commercial relationship.

In statements to the press in the central Cuban province of Villa Clara, the diplomat also said that Cuba will maintain cooperation in security, migration, and crime prevention, emphasizing that it will prioritize defending its sovereignty against economic pressure and political confrontation.

The bilateral relationship requires respect and adherence to the current technical agreements, he observed.
