So far, no major damage has been reported in the province of Camagüey due to Hurricane Melissa, although strict monitoring of the cyclonic system continues.
This was confirmed by Walter Simón Noris, president of the Provincial Defense Council, and Jorge Enrique Sutil Sarabia, vice president of that body and head of Civil Defense in the Agramont territory, during a tour of the northern area, specifically the Santa Lucía beach resort, where gusts of wind, strong waves and intermittent rainfall still prevail.
Sutil Sarabia noted that the different structures were prepared from the early warning system to mitigate the impact of the meteorological phenomenon, especially to protect the most vulnerable people.
Likewise, he acknowledged the contribution and discipline of the people of Camagüey in complying with the measures adopted for each phase, and considered that the province will continue to prioritize street cleaning, solid waste collection, and the prevention of arboviruses.
In Camagüey, he stated, contingents from other provinces are concentrated, who together with the brigades of electrical linemen, from the telecommunications sector and from the Water and Sewerage Department of Camagüey will support the recovery efforts in the eastern provinces, which suffered the blow of the powerful hurricane.
However, based on studies of danger, vulnerability, and risk in the province, she added, more than 60,000 people remain under protection, both in state-run centers and in the homes of family and friends.
