Guatemala: Historian Chaulón Urges Studying the Work of Fidel Castro

Guatemala City, Nov. 26 – The renowned academic Mauricio Chaulón urged Guatemala to study the work of Fidel Castro, which he considered necessary today given the conditions present on both the local and international stage.

In an emotional tribute in this capital to the historical leader of the Cuban Revolution on the ninth anniversary of his passing, the historian, on behalf of his family, first acknowledged that he himself is a beneficiary of the island’s healthcare system.

He confessed that he has been surviving for eight years after being treated in the largest of the Antilles for a severe blood cancer problem and, thanks to the swift and effective intervention of a group of institutions, he is here today.

The social anthropologist also commented on the fundamental importance of history not only when you benefit from it firsthand but also when analyzing the work of Fidel Castro, especially during hard times.

“How do we currently face the tragedy of Gaza, for example, the inhumanity of some governments like that of the State of Israel?” he asked before friends and residents of the Caribbean island in this country.

“So we remember Fidel’s words, ‘the struggle is always ongoing,’ and that ideas at this moment are as fundamental as firearms,” he described.

The ideological meaning – the professor considered – is a cohesive cement, but history shows every day that people are much more united than imperialism thinks.

He mentioned that resistance is also struggle, and thus the ideas of the Commander in Chief become concepts, categories, even methods to understand reality.

He recalled words of the Guatemalan poet Roberto Obregón, found in a mural at the University of San Carlos of Guatemala, dedicated precisely to the martyrs of that institution of higher education.

“It is not after death that we go, it is after life,” he added while stating that Fidel was a paradigm of that.

If we philosophically value the thought of the Commander in Chief, we find that it was always his goal to move toward life; “I do not say was—he is a great philosopher of life,” emphasized representatives of solidarity associations.

Despite having the siege (from the United States) since 1959, with the longest economic blockade in history, that Revolution is present, he praised.

Its actions survive in medical brigades, as well as the island’s vaccines against Covid-19, Chaulón asserted before artists and intellectuals.

He described Cuba as a great heroine that has survived all possible attacks of capital, including more than 600 assassination attempts on the Commander in Chief in an effort to fracture the Revolution.

It withstood the worst waves of capitalism; therefore, that dialectic for interpreting Fidel’s thought must be understood through his actions, the researcher insisted.
