The Ministry of Science, Technology, and Environment in the province of Holguín is conducting research aimed at protecting wetlands, prioritized ecosystems, and those vulnerable to human activity.
Geovanny Zaldívar Martínez, deputy environmental delegate, stated that these areas possess great scenic and economic importance and are located in the bays of Nipe, Banes, Moa, Gibara, Bariay, and Vita.
The official explained that their main function is to safeguard the coasts from erosion, serve as natural nurseries for the regeneration of marine flora, support artisanal fishing, and act as refuges for birds and small species of crustaceans and fish.
He noted that through the coastal management programs of the Center for Environmental Research and Services, projects aimed at protecting wetlands affected by mining and industrial activities are being promoted.
Zaldívar Martínez specified that the studies focus on monitoring flora and fauna populations, reforestation of mangroves, mitigating the effects of climate change, and the sustainable use of resources.
Among the protection projects is environmental education for adolescents and young people through community centers established in coastal areas, where participation contests and commemorative events are held, he emphasized.
The province of Holguín has an extensive program for protecting prioritized ecosystems, focused on their ecological, economic, and social value. It integrates forests, mountains, coasts, and watersheds, all essential to maintaining natural balance and reducing the effects of climate change.
