Landslide in Indonesia leaves 34 dead and several missing

Jakarta, Jan 28 - A recent landslide in the province of West Java caused the death of 34 people, while dozens remain missing, the Indonesian government acknowledged today.

The disaster buried around 30 houses and caused significant damage to many more, in addition to destroying the crops in the village of Pasirlangu.

According to authorities, more than 650 residents had to be relocated after their neighborhood was devastated on January 24.

The heavy rains in recent days triggered the incident and still hinder rescue efforts due to the instability of the terrain, which poses a risk to emergency teams, as new landslides could occur at any moment.

Images released by the National Search and Rescue Agency show multiple volunteers and rescuers working with tools to remove the dense layer of mud.

The identified victims are being delivered to their families as the identification process advances, but it is feared that many more bodies will be found in the coming hours.
