Reinforced Laos, Myanmar, and Thailand environmental protection

Vientiane, Jan 27 - Laos, Myanmar, and Thailand today approved a Joint Action Plan 2026-2027 to address transboundary air pollution, with coordinated measures aimed at reducing the seasonal haze affecting the Mekong subregion.

The agreement was adopted during a meeting held in this capital, where the three parties agreed to strengthen technical and political cooperation, with an emphasis on the early detection of forest fires.

The plan includes the development of joint fire risk maps, a unified environmental monitoring system, and the promotion of sustainable agricultural practices to decrease open burning.

They also agreed to create a Technical Working Group to ensure that decisions are based on scientific evidence and verified data.

As part of the strategy, awareness campaigns will be promoted targeting local communities and the agricultural sector, with the purpose of encouraging sustainable alternatives and reducing pollutant emissions.

At the close of the meeting, the delegates reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening regional cooperation to ensure clean air and a healthier environment.
