Museums, guardians of collective memory

Museums, guardians of collective memory

May, 2026.- Every May 18th, the world celebrates International Museum Day—those venues which, beyond walls and display cases, become guardians of collective memory. They are spaces where history beats like a heart that never stops, reminding us that culture is a river flowing through all time.

The Municipal Museum of Guáimaro is a living example of this mission. There, every exhibited object is a testimony that links generations, a silent notice that teaches without words. Its actions validate what José Martí said in August 1883: “Exhibitions are no longer mere places for strolling. They are notices: they are enormous and silent lessons: they are schools. A people that sees nothing to learn in them has no path toward progress.”

The institution in Guáimaro, with its commitment to preserving and disseminating heritage, becomes an open classroom, where local and national history are revealed in pieces that speak of struggles, dreams, and hopes. It is a space that invites reflection and the awareness that without memory, there is no future.

Museums, in their essence, are more than repositories of objects: they are wonderful universes that remind us who we were, who we are, and where we can walk. They are perennial beats of existence, capable of transforming the perspective of those who approach them with the desire to learn.
