For Rafael Téllez Barba, an IT specialist at the Municipal Center for Risk and Disaster Reduction and a member of the Radio Club executive in Guáimaro, collaboration during hurricane times becomes an urgent mission.
As part of the family of 20 amateur radio operators in the easternmost of the Camagüeyan municipalities, he contributes to informing the people from the frequencies established in the territory when meteorological or other events affect the radio and television signal, or when communication with hard-to-reach communities is necessary.
“We have helped in the evacuation of people, in getting food to them, in reporting on the situation of the dams or any measure that the authorities should take,” says Téllez Barba from the Command Post based in the Government, where the Municipal Defense Council supervises measures and leads prevention actions in the face of the threat of Hurricane Melissa.
According to the Granma newspaper, the National Emergency Network of the Cuban Amateur Radio Federation (REN-FRC) was activated yesterday at noon via station CO9DCN, from the National Civil Defense Headquarters.
