Boxer Lázaro Álvarez achieves third continental title defense

Cuban Lázaro Álvarez will defend his World Boxing Association (WBA) continental American title for the third time in a 10-round bout against Mexican Raúl Hernández on November 29th in a professional event at the Meliá Internacional Hotel in Varadero.

Álvarez, a three-time amateur world champion and undefeated in six professional boxing bouts, will compete in the 61.3 kilogram (kg) weight class against a man with 15 wins, three losses, and two draws in that weight class, according to the sports website Jit.

The president of the Cuban Boxing Federation, Alberto Puig de la Barca, recalled that Lázaro won that professional title in a fight held at the Cuban resort itself, and then retained it in Argentina and Germany.

This fight will be one of three 10-round bouts scheduled for the main event segment of the day, which will also feature fellow countryman Erislandy Álvarez, champion of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, defending his WBA Latin Continental title at 63.5 kg.

Erislandy will seek his seventh consecutive victory on those circuits against Mexican challenger Rogelio Jiménez, who has won 14 fights, lost two, and drawn one.

As part of the program, Yunier Sorsano (69.8 kg/eight rounds), Saidel Horta (57.1 kg/six rounds), Nelson Williams (90.7 kg/six), Keylor García (79.3/six) and Alejandro Claro (50.8 kg/six) will also enter the ring, but their opponents have not yet been made official.

The president of the Cuban Boxing Federation, Alberto Puig de la Barca, said he is working with promoter Agon Sports to identify the opponents who will close out the card, which is expected to feature two bouts between foreign boxers.

Meanwhile, national boxing commissioner Robinson Poll announced that from November 2 to 11, Claro, Luis Enrique Vinent (60 kg) and the young Anthony Fabars (57 kg) will travel to a tournament in the Seychelles Islands, and Jorge Cuéllar (70 kg) will fight in Russia.

Also in December, the Eurasian nation will host 13-14 year-olds for a school competition and those who will participate in the traditional Karaganda competition.
