President of Mexico holds press conference at National Palace

Mexico City, Nov. 3 - The press conference by President Claudia Sheinbaum will take place today, as usual, at the National Palace, following the cancellation of the meeting with journalists that was scheduled to be held at the Los Pinos Cultural Complex.

According to what was announced last week by the president herself, this Monday the progress regarding the preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, jointly organized by Mexico, Canada, and the United States, was to be presented.

The newspaper La Jornada reports that the change in the agenda released by the Presidency of the Republic comes after the assassination last Saturday of the mayor of Uruapan, Carlos Manzo, an act that was condemned with absolute firmness by the head of the Executive.

The day before, the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Omar García, told reporters that the Security Cabinet is closely and permanently supporting the development of investigations to clarify this crime and apprehend those responsible.

At the end of a public event on Saturday in downtown Uruapan, in the western state of Michoacán, a man fired seven shots with a firearm at the municipal president.

The assailant was neutralized by security personnel and also died, after which the weapon and the seven spent casings were seized.

García stated on Sunday that, according to initial investigations, the seized weapon is linked to two incidents of attacks between rival criminal groups operating in the region.

After analyzing videos and surveillance cameras, the perpetrator's whereabouts (who did not have identification) and his movements at the scene of the events were located, while authorities conducted interviews with witnesses and requested videos from stores and other businesses.

"No line of investigation is being ruled out to clarify this cowardly act that took the life of the mayor. I want to emphasize that Carlos Manzo had assigned protection since December 2024, and in May of this year there was an additional reinforcement," said the official.

He detailed that his immediate security was provided by personnel from the Municipal Police of his trust, and the National Guard assigned 14 elements to support them with peripheral security, according to the mayor's request, in addition to two official vehicles for his protection.
