January 3rd - Russia expressed its "deep concern" over the capture of Venezuela's president, Nicolás Maduro, and his wife, Cilia Flores, by the U.S.
The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a communiqué that, according to reports, the president and the first lady of Venezuela "were forcibly removed from the country during the aggressive actions" carried out in the early hours of this Saturday by U.S. forces.
It then urged Washington to "immediately clarify" what happened, within the framework of an aggression that it described as an "unacceptable violation of the sovereignty of an independent state, whose respect is a fundamental principle of international law."
Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that during tonight's attack, which affected the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, as well as the states of Miranda, La Guaira, and Aragua, Maduro and the first lady were captured and "taken out of the country."
The detention of Maduro and Flores was later confirmed by the Venezuelan vice president, Delcy Rodríguez, who demanded that the U.S. government provide "immediate proof of life" of both.
