Trump receives Zelensky: Peace plan for Ukraine is in the final phase

December - The President of the United States, Donald Trump, received his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, this Sunday to discuss a peace plan aimed at ending the war in Ukraine with strong guarantees, and assured that the negotiations are in their "final phase," although he ruled out setting a deadline to reach an agreement.

Answering questions from the press before the meeting, Trump stated that the plan includes "strong" security guarantees for Ukraine. When repeatedly questioned about this point, he dismissed a reporter's question and called it "stupid," The Guardian reported. Nevertheless, he affirmed: "There will be a security agreement. It will be a solid agreement. European nations are very involved in it."

The U.S. president highlighted the role of Europe in the process and assured that the countries on the continent "have been really great" and "they are all great people." He reiterated that there is no set deadline to close a peace agreement that would end the conflict.

Trump said that the talks are moving towards a conclusion. "I think we are in the final stages," he declared, considering that a swift outcome is possible. He warned that the alternative would be a prolonged conflict: “Either it will end or it will go on for a long time, and millions more people will die. And nobody wants that.”

When asked another question, the president insisted on the pace of the negotiations: "I think we can move very quickly."

For his part, Zelensky stated that 90 percent of the peace plan, composed of 20 points, has already been jointly developed by the Ukrainian and U.S. teams. He indicated that the meeting would address the pending aspects, including the territorial issue.

After the statements, both leaders turned and entered Mar-a-Lago to begin their closed-door talks.
